On Friday, a friend and prior podcast guest, Ayaka Matsui, said “why do we create?” aloud before her musical performance.
And it got me thinking and reflecting on….
Why I do create podcast episodes? Why do I create and host Podcast Mixers?
Asking “why” to yourself and to other people can lead to some great observations and conversations.
Sometimes, if you ask “why” to someone, it can lead to a defensive answer and awkward conversation (initially). However, if you can push past this, an incredible conversation can unfold for you!
So let’s treat this like an incredible conversation….. sound good?
Okay so… I think the 5 Why’s Framework is really helpful to better understand someone, their interests, and/or a situation. By the way, I think I first learned about this from Nick Kengmana (thanks Nick!).
How The 5 Why’s Framework Works:
You keep (thoughtfully) asking “why” 5 times in a row during a conversation.
-Them: I do X.
-You: Why do you do X?
-Them: Because of A, B, and C… (rinse and repeat)
Here are my 5 Why’s about 1-1 podcasting and hosting Podcast Mixers:
1-1 podcast episodes:
I really enjoy getting to know someone and having a thoughtful and in-depth 1-1 conversation with them
I really like sending outreach emails to people…. I love the tension and thrill of wondering if someone will say “yes” to be on the show or not
Producing my podcast has led to amazing things in my life, like my current job, and I am likely afraid what could happen to me spiritually if I stopped the show
I deeply value connection. And podcasting is one proven way to really connect with someone
Fear. I am afraid that if I lost my job that I would be stuck. Podcasting helps me feel like I am making progress no matter what.
Podcast Mixers
It’s a fun way to record podcast episodes, and it probably saves me time compared to 1-1 interviews
I want to host events to see my friends and hopefully make new ones
I want to learn and feel things that may not happen in my day-to-day
I find that it can be challenging to regularly see friends and people I have met. Hosting an event is a great way to ask my friends to hang out
People like my events (from what I can tell) and I generally have enneagram type 2 traits and people pleaser tendencies - so I am going to keep doing them.
As you can see… with each “why” I became more vulnerable and open about my situation and feelings. The same will likely happen for you and your conversations when you ask people “why” 5 times in a row!
How about you? I would love to learn more about you and your work through the 5 Whys. Reply back and/or comment below to let me know! Thank you!

#325: Childhood Stories with Kaila and Freddi
My Mom was recently in NYC and I produced a Podcast Mixer connected to her visit about childhood stories. It was a special night, and not as cringe as I thought it could be lol. I am really glad my Mom got to meet some of my friends, and vice versa. Today is a good day to integrate more parts of your life!

#324: Setting Boundaries As A Community Builder
Setting boundaries as a community builder or someone building a portfolio career can be so helpful. I chatted with Lindsey Lerner and Ruthie Berber about this and much more during this live podcast recording during NY Tech Week at Fabrik.
Alright, that’s enough of “what” for now….. :)
