Are you looking to make a work transition?
If so, I think you will really enjoy my recent podcast chat with Kevin Zych about his transition and so much more!
Here are a few related topics that stood out to me:
Deciding To Take The Leap
Watch this video clip to hear how Kevin took a career leap and why!
Here is the slightly edited excerpt from the above video:
I'm either gonna just stay here and rot, or I'm gonna go take this chance: once in a lifetime opportunity and pursue my art full time. And I really want to do that, so let's go do the really fun, daring, exciting thing. And because I had like enough evidence that… I can make a little money here and there. I can at least pay rent. I can pay for groceries.
After Kevin took the leap, here is a little bit about what happened after that.
Kevin’s early monetization efforts:
In the podcast episode, Kevin talked about how his social media channels started to grow when he posted more videos about his work. Then, he started to receive brand sponsorship inquiries. One company early-on offered him around $700. While this is not enough money to get-by living in NYC, he thought it was an encouraging initial sign. He then thought that brand sponsorship deals combined with selling commissioned sketches could be more promising starting out as well!
Figuring out his high-leverage work:
In the episode, Kevin also talked about how he iterated to figure out his high-leverage work1.
I would spend 20 hours going around to the marathon, making the sketches, making the video, posting it, trying to put the drawings up on my website, trying to sell them. And I would make like $100 and it was like a ton of work for like nothing. But then, you do that enough times, and you start to learn like how can I do all of this in not 20 hours, but 10 hours? And how can I do it in five? And how can I do it in three? And you start to think a little more strategically about how you spend your time.
And now, Kevin works full-time on his own work. Pretty cool, right?
He also created a course called “Zero to Sixty Sketchbook School” and is building community and hosting in-person events with the Crayon Club in NYC. The next Crayon Club meetup is on Saturday September 6th.
You can learn more about his live event sketch work, art, human connection, and so much more here!

Note: this is a slightly edited excerpt from the podcast episode. The text is slightly edited to hopefully be easier to read. The core content from the podcast episode and related excerpt remains in tact. Any mistake with this is mine too!
