Like life, my podcasting journey has been non-linear. You too? Reply back and let me know!
If you are wondering, how has 5 years of consistently podcasting all come together? This post is for you. My hope is that you might be able to see how small things now, can become big over time 💥
I wanted to expand upon this recent tweet and its related life lessons for you!
If you just want some life lessons, here they are haha:
adjacent projects and developing additional skills related to your craft can really help you level-up
when you experience something unexpectedly working better than expected, keep going with it
look for new macro trends and shifts, that change your perspective and open-up possibility
when something new clicks and feels good, try to do it again soon
asking your friends for help can lead to something better than expected
when you commit to something ambitious, you will push yourself to level-up
Alright, let’s dive in!
Episode 66 with Seth Godin over Zoom
Well, actually there were two key experiences and learnings before episode 66 haha…
I started my podcast in Seth and Alex DiPalma’s Podcasting Fellowship course in the summer of 2018 in the first cohort. For the second cohort, I was asked to serve as a coach. This was a big unlock for me. I developed skills, confidence, more accountability, skin in the game, and definitely a reason to keep podcasting!
Lesson: adjacent projects and developing additional skills related to your craft can really help you level-up
Also, around this time in 2018 and 2019, I started to realize that I could cold email high-profile people and some would be open to chatting on the podcast.
Lesson: when you experience something unexpectedly working better than expected, keep going with it
The actual episode with Seth was an unlock because it also gave me a lot of social proof and more confidence too! The video of this podcast is on my podcast website!
Episode 101: remote only episodes
In early 2020 with the pandemic, I could only record episodes online. I did record online episodes before episode 101 but it felt more one-off and random. But starting in 2020, everyone was effectively on Zoom and recording meetings became more common. The growing culture of “Let’s hop on Zoom” made people more comfortable recording podcasts too. I then realized the number of potential people I could talk to was a lot bigger and more vast. Especially because it felt like so many of us had a shared experience with COVID-19, were at home and kind of bored lol.
Lesson: look for new macro trends and shifts, that change your perspective and open-up possibility
Episode 226: First IRL Podcast Mixer
On July 15th 2022, I recorded and produced my first Podcast Mixer. It was also my first in-person recording since episode 100. Wait… why did I decide to go big like this for my first in-person episode in 2 years lol? 🤣
Anyways, it was an inflection point on my levels because both the speaker, Chris Schembra, and the event attendees said good things. This encouraged me to try it again….
Lesson: when something new clicks and feels good, try to do it again soon
Episode 273: first community-led Podcast Mixer
For 2023, my theme has been “double-down.” Within that, I wanted to double-down on Podcast Mixers. During the first half of 2023, I was making a lot of progress on this vision. However, one time, an emergency caused a situation when a speaker couldn’t attend a planned Podcast Mixer. I needed to do something….
So, I told the situation to one person planning to attend. I shared with her a loose and half baked idea. She is an incredible friend — she believed in the idea AND agreed to share a short story for the podcast. With a little bit more confidence now, I then asked a few other closer friends attending if they could share a short story… and then boom… the community-led Podcast Mixers were born where 4 people share short stories 🎉
Lesson: asking your friends for help can lead to something better than expected
Episode 280: Podcast Mixer with Seth Godin
This was my biggest Podcast Mixer on my levels: it had the most amount of people, it was with Seth, and it was at a different venue. So yeah, there was a lot of moving parts and (good) tension with it. In the end, the Podcast Mixer was magical though. And it has opened up new possibilities of doing more large-scale Podcast Mixers like this….
Lesson: when you commit to something ambitious, you will push yourself to level-up
Enough about me… I want to hear from you! What has been a recent inflection or level-up moment for you? Reply back and let me know! 👋
