You can go all-in if you want.
When I was playing sports growing-up, I loved feeling like “I gave it my all” when it was over. Or “leaving it all on the field.” With events, it is possible to replicate some of this.
I mean, check out my unofficial BeReal after a recent event. I was tired, excited, proud, etc… all at the same time! I tried to leave it all on the field!
The feedback loop with events is thrilling.
In real-time, people will tell you if something is amazing or off. In a lot of areas of work, you are waiting…. to hear back. With events, it’s immediate!
Events are so freaking generative.
If everyone who attends an event, makes one new friend, the ripple effect of that is profound. Also, when you invite people to events, people will invite you to their events. “Sorry I can’t, but want to come to this?” — this happens all of the time.
The lead-up to an event is energizing (and can also be nerve-wracking haha).
An upcoming event becomes a script running in the back of my head. How can I make this better? Do I need to tell more people about it? Did I overextend myself? Instead of scrolling, I am scheming and connecting.
There is little downside to hosting an event.
It’s free to invite people to it and no one has said “stop inviting me to your events.” Instead of saying “let’s catch-up” or asking “what’s new?” you can literally just invite people to something and maybe you will see them. And if they can’t make it, they may tell you what is going on in their lives. I can’t tell you how many times I learned something new about a friend this way!
It’s a tool to see your friends and as a way bring people closer to you as my friend Saba once said.
Living in NYC can be tough and uncertain socially. Are people busy? Are people traveling? Are people down to hang? Are we friends? You can literally find out by inviting people to something! I used to go out to bars to make try to make friends, and now I can host an event! It’s a huge unlock!
I love hosting events. How about you?

#363: Building Together: How Community Builders Have Collaborated
Seven community builders, on a rainy night, got together discussed how and why they have collaborated with other people, communities, and organizations. It was a fascinating discussion about the importance of having a value exchange when collaborating, outlining roles in advance, minimum viable collaborations, minimum viable friction, consistent and aligned communication and so much more!
I shared a story about how I collaborated with my friends Rachel and Kyle on this special Podcast Mixer!
#362: Having Hard Conversations
During this episode, you will hear stories about hard conversations. My biggest takeaway from this event was that hard conversations are easier when you talk to friends about them!
To your next event,
PS: speaking of sports and leaving it all on the field, I love this interview clip. If you call me after hosting an event, I want to sound like this haha!
PPS: if you want to read more event hosting from me, check this out!
An honor to be mentioned! 100% agree with this, there is so much upside to hosting events and even an invitation that isn’t accepted can lead to connection
